Sausage Sandwiches

Few things are as savory as an Italian sausage sandwich, whether it’s barbecued, broiled or pan fried. The key ingredient is a good quality Italian sausage. Choose your favorite, whether it be pork, turkey or chicken. Use a good fresh Italian or French roll, Mexican bolillo, or torpedo roll. Pick one that works nicely with the sausage you’re using; so that the bread doesn’t overwhelm the sausage. Cut into, but not all the way through the roll, so that the sausage will be held in it.

Here then, are some great combinations to try. If you’re cooking for more than just yourself, whether it be a large or small crowd, get ready to have your ego boosted a couple of notches. Typically, “Wow! This Is Great!” or “Ahhhh!” are familiar words and sounds you’ll hear after the first bite. So go ahead, ham it up a little…you deserve it!

Here are some quick and easy ideas to get you started, after that, be creative…you’re on your own!

With Peppers & Onions

    • Barbecue, broil, or pan fry the sausage.
    • Clean and remove the seeds from one green bell pepper, then slice it thinly.
    • Slice one-half of an onion.
    • Cook the peppers and onions in one tablespoon of olive oil for about fifteen minutes, covered over medium heat.
    • Spoon peppers and onions over the sausage in your favorite roll.
(To REALLY impress, you may also want to top the sandwich with a small ladle of Caryn’s Sunday sauce, and finish it off with some grated Mozzarella cheese).

With Tomato, Avocado & Lettuce

    • Barbecue, broil, or pan fry the sausage.
    • Spread mayonnaise and ketchup on a fresh roll, then add the sausage, sliced tomato wedges, avocado and lettuce.
